Crab Butter Popcorn

By Mary Parks | 10 minutes

This recipe takes less than 10 minutes to whip up. Made with a kick of Old Bay seasoning and St. Ours Crab powdered green crab broth. It’s also an easy snack to bring on your next fishing or camping trip. Make it over a fire, with a camp stove, or using a conventional stove.  This recipe was developed for a foraging and education day with Movement Education Outdoors.

MATERIALS & INGREDIENTS

  • 1 small-medium pot with a lid

  • 1 Tbsp neutral oil (canola, vegetable, or other high-heat oil)

  • ~ 1/4 cup popcorn

  • 2 tbsp salted butter

  • 1 packet of St. Ours Crab Broth

  • ~1 tsp Old Bay

  • A fork or small whisk

  • 1 bowl for serving and mixing

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place your pot on medium heat. If using an open fire, you’ll need a grate and make sure not to put the pot directly on the fire.

  2. Add oil and a layer of popcorn kernels (just enough so you have one layer of kernels).

  3. Cover your pot and wait until you hear popping noises. Once the kernels start to pop, give the pot a good shake.

  4. Keep on heat until popping noises are more than one second apart, then remove from heat and transfer the kernels to your bowl.

  5. Add butter, Old Bay, and crab broth into the pot, stir, and bloom the spices in your melting butter until there are no chunks. Blooming is the process of activating spices in heat and fat.

  6. Drizzle the butter over your popcorn in the bowl or add your popcorn back into the pot and give it a good shake. Dust with some extra Old Bay and enjoy!

Crab Class x Sophia Academy + Movement Education Outdoors

On May 15th, GreenCrab.org teamed up with Movement Education Outdoors for a day of in-field learning at Gull Cove in Portsmouth, RI. Sophia Academy students collected crabs and learned about green crabs’ relationship with native species such as fiddler crabs (pictured). This recipe was developed for this education day and prepared on the shore of Gull Cove.
